Passed Lives: New Works by Linda Ayala & Andy Dreamingwolf
March 8th - April 26th, 2013
Passed Lives is an exhibition of portaiture from Cleveland artists Linda Ayala and Andy Dreamingwolf. Opening Proximity's 4th year of exhibitions, Ayala and Dreamingwolf bring deftly rendered and imaginitive characters to life. Characters that are at once captivating, compel the viewer to construct fictional histories, family trees, and social rankings. We can't be sure that these fragments of history didn't exist. But we can be sure that the nostalgia conjured by them is very real.
Ayala's delicate touch and ability to execute on an extremely small scale adds an element of awe to her already fantastic portraits which often fuse the human-like expressions and qualities of animals to the historic nature of a traditional portrait.
Dreamingwolf, who utilizes monochromatic and sepia tone colors in his paintings, draws on history with a provacative sensibility. Smiling weirdos, bandaged businessmen, and masked Femme Fatales are among his diverse collection of subjects.
